Hydrometeorological monitoring of the Caspian Sea is carried out at the Sea Hydrometeorology Center of the National Hydrometeorology Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. The Center holds observation network located in water area of the Republic of Azerbaijan of the Caspian Sea. The network contains 14 observation posts situated in sea coasts, islands, trestles and platforms. The following works are conducted at the center: organization and implementation of hydrometeorological observations, obtainment, analysis, generalization of data and compilation of sea annuals. Furthermore hydrometeorological data are received from open sea regions via ship expeditions.
Daily, monthly and annual data obtained on hydrometeorological parameters of the Caspian Sea (sea level, saltness and temperature of sea water, sea currents, wave, weather temperature and humidity, velocity and direction of wind and etc.) are collocated in sea annuals composed for each year.
Thus all stages are carried out regarding obtainment of hydrometeorological parameters at the Sea Htdrometeorology Center in water area of the Republic of Azerbaijan of the Caspian Sea. In the recent years sea observation network has been enhanced and provided with cutting-edge equipments. In this regard observation post was started to activate in 2005 first time among Caspian Sea countries which is situated in the sea area with the depth of 100 m (in 28 May district) as well as in Sangi-Mugan island. Automatic apparatus was installed at the “Neft Dashlari” settlement which is able to measure sea level, wave, water temperature and atmospheric pressure.
Majority of sea network posts were provided with new contemporary anemometers and their meteorological platforms were repaired.
Substantial scientific-practical works are implemented at the Sea Hydrometeorology Center as well. In this regard level fluctuation of the Caspian Sea and long term prognosis method was prepared.
“Flood-lands atlas of coastal areas of the Republic of Azerbaijan” was compiled according to excessive rise of the Caspian Sea level in the late 25 years. Flood-lands characteristics regarding on shore districts and flood-lands areas for future condition of level rise are indicated in this atlas. In addition practical and scientific-research works are carried out at the Center on priority problems of the Caspian Sea.
